Adding a blog post

  1. Prepare imagery on your laptop and name the files so that they will be easy to assemble into the blog post. If there are TIFF’s, convert them to JPG or other supported format. Make sure the images are cropped properly so that they can flow into the post as intended. There are limits of several MB’s and dimensions that will cause squarespace to abort the upload, so make sure they are formatted appropriately for web delivery.

  2. Navigate to Asset Library, create a folder for the new post and click into it, upload the imagery from your laptop.

  3. Navigate to the Works blog collection and click ‘+’ to start a new post.

  4. Enter a title and start adding images and text. It’s generally good to start the post with the image that will be used to represent the post on other pages. NOTE: You can add images individually or as galleries. When adding images, be sure to select the images from the Asset Library and don’t upload new images from your laptop. Squarespace’s insert image dialogs are not consistently designed, so be sure to look for the option to go to the Asset Library. Extra uploaded images will just clutter your asset library with multiple copies of the same thing and also may make delivering the images to visitors browsers slower.

  5. Publish the post when you’re done editing or Save it if you want to come back later to continue working in it.

  6. Click the dot-dot-dot menu on the new post to bring up settings. Select the image from the Asset Library that you will use to represent the post. Note the post URL a little further down that panel - it will be used to add a menu item later. Click options and add an appropriate category - Research, Art, Work In Progress, etc. - note that you need to press return after typing the name for it to be added.

  7. Back out of the blog collection and click Website Tools near the bottom of the page. Scroll down to code injection. You’ll see the data structure that contains the navigation menu at the top. Note the punctuation carefully when adding lines - it must be exact - and that every line ends with a comma except the last line. Save the changes. There’s no version control or rolbacks, so be careful.

  8. Test the menu and post. Open an incognito tab and navigate to the web site.
